I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change
–Michael Jackson, “Man in the Mirror”
Amidst a very busy week, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with a friend I had not visited with in about 2 years. As we concluded the initial “catching up” part of the conversation, she proceeded to tell me that her current professional role was coming to an end on December 31st and she was in search of a new position. Her concerns, at near 40, was that her resume might seem a bit disjointed, as she had served in a variety of roles in her professional life. I smiled and simply asked her, “Did those roles serve as stepping stones to the woman and professional you are today? What if this phase in your life was not a challenge to be feared but, rather, a great adventure that just might lead to opened doors you never expected?” She smiled back, receiving this new perspective willingly. She, like me, had encountered tremendous adversity in her life. She had survived a great loss as well as a tremendous physical scare. I looked across the table from her and saw this amazing woman, as I was sure she did not yet see herself. I wanted her to look at herself and see, in her own eyes, how absolutely beautiful, gifted, talented and skilled she truly was. I knew she would set the world on fire; she just did not yet know it.
Our world continues to change. Daily, weekly, monthly…But none of that matters if we are not digging deeply into our own SHE-souls. You know, the piece of you that only YOU can see? What does it matter how you “look on paper?” What does it matter what you weigh or the color of your hair? Change is a part of our evolution…the Evolution of SHE.
Here is a challenge for you – not just a challenge for today, but a challenge as we wind up our year: Go to your favorite quiet place (mine, as you know is on my yoga mat) and breathe. Breathe long and deep and look inside. How have you changed or evolved with time, life’s circumstances, the world we live in today? No one is looking or passing judgment, so be honest with only you in this quiet place.
But wait, there’s more 🙂
Now, go look into a mirror. Look into your own eyes and weigh in on what you see there. Without judgment, without airs.
I am not a Facebook profile. I am not my job. I am not the house I live in or the car I drive. I am not who I did or did not vote for. I am not defined by the number of times I have been married or if I have ever been married at all.
SHE-friends, our eyes are the window to our soul. What we see in the mirror should be nothing more than a reflection of who we truly are, in the very depths of our soul.
And here is the question of the week and the remainder of this year, 2016, my 50th year: Am I “walking the walk” to my own truth? Is my SHE in the mirror so honest and authentic, that she lives who she is? That’s right, not a typo. SHE LIVES who SHE IS. Now go out there and make a difference; the difference starts with you.
